German Elections Explained: Interview with Dr. Hirscher on State and Local Voting Trends
In Germany’s federal political system, elections at the state or Bundesländer-level—as well as local elections—tend to attract a great deal of media attention. They’re often seen as a barometer of public satisfaction with political parties and as a reflection of the the country’s overall political mood.
This year and next, Germany is holding a number of regional and local elections. On March 8 and March 22, state elections already took place in Baden-Württemberg—one of the three most populous and geographically largest states—and in Rhineland-Palatinate. There have also been local elections in Bavaria in March.
