German Elections Explained: Interview with Dr. Hirscher on State and Local Voting Trends

Dr. Gerhard Hirscher analyzes Germany’s recent state and local elections, highlighting key political trends and what they reveal about voter sentiment and the country’s shifting political landscape.

In Germany’s federal political system, elections at the state or Bundesländer-level—as well as local elections—tend to attract a great deal of media attention. This year and next, Germany is holding a number of regional and local elections. On March 8 and March 22, state elections already took place in Baden-Württemberg—one of the three most populous and geographically largest states—and in Rhineland-Palatinate. There have also been local elections in Bavaria in March.
